Vocal Recital: "I Have a Dream" Soprano Julie Ziavras & pianist-composer Steve Margoshes |
Puffin Foundation Cultural Forum (20 Puffin Way (Formerly East Oakdene Ave, off Teaneck Rd.) Teaneck, NJ 07666 |
Chanteuse/opera soprano Julie Ziavras and pianist/composer Steve Margoshes will present "I Have a Dream", a concert about the American
dream in song, the struggles of displaced people here and elsewhere who
long to assimilate; their hopes and struggles captured in song. The program includes black-influenced music, Negro spirituals, two charming songs selections from Montsalvatge's song cycle about the Negro population in Cuba, music of Jewish émigrés such as Kurt Weill and Irving Berlin. Berlin paved the way for a new generation of "sons of" Jewish immigrants who wanted to assimilate and work in tin pan alley promoting their music as new popular American music, helping to create a new American popular music with a style of its own that borrowed from Yiddish theater, Eastern European Jewish and cantorial roots and African American music. The program will include works by Gershwin and writers of the famous Broadway scores. The concert will present songs by the Greek composer Mikis Theodorakis, one of Greece's greatest songwriters and a key voice against the Greek junta, aggression and oppression, from his cycle "Mauthausen" a piece rarely performed in the US about a young girl taken by the Nazis to the Mauthauzen Concentration Camp. It was written to the poetry of a Greek-Jewish lyricist Iakov Kambanellis who was himself imprisoned by the Nazis. We will also hear some of Theodorakis' popular songs about the Greek refugees who escaped the Turkish ethnic cleansing in Asia Minor. These songs talk about life in the ghettos of Athens where these refugees settled. Special for this performance is Julie performing Joan Baez on guitar and "I Have A Dream," a composition by Steve Margoshes that brings the inspirational words of Dr. Martin Luther King's speech to musical life. It was first performed at the Martin Luther King Celebration in Atlanta by invitation from Coretta Scott King. $10 suggested donation.
